THE LOST EMBER (Making-of Video Coming Soon)
Dimensions: 17" × 9" × 1"
Rescued from the firewood pile. Revealed by hand.
Some things aren't discarded because they're worthless.
They're discarded because nobody has yet seen what they could become.
I found this piece in a firewood pile.
No metaphor. No poetic exaggeration. An actual firewood pile.
While filming a video at Forestech Wood Products in West Union, Illinois, I spotted this chunk of quilted maple lying among the offcuts and stove wood. Most people would have seen a rough block covered in saw marks and bark.
I saw what was hiding underneath.
After filming the scene, I tossed the piece into the back of my wife's car and brought it home.
Normally, my hardwood supplier, Steve Shawler, runs the lumber I purchase through his industrial planer before I leave. On this day, however, I was there after hours and on my own. What followed was three days and roughly fifteen hours of flattening, shaping, sanding, and finishing.
The dramatic flame-like figure visible across the surface is known as chatoyance, an optical effect created by the wood's complex grain structure. As light moves across the piece, the grain appears to shift and ripple beneath the surface, creating a remarkable sense of depth and motion.
Had this board remained where I found it, it likely would have warmed a room for an evening.
Instead, it gets to tell its story for years.
I think that's a much better fate.
"People only see what they are prepared to see."
